I am currently 17 years old, and I am interested in joining the fire department when I am 18 (as a volunteer). Does anyone know if volunteers need to go to an academy, or is that just for a career firefighters? Thanks for your help

You do have to go through some fire safety classes but it's not a full blown academy like a career firefighter does. But just like some else said talk to someone at the fire department in your neighborhood, they will answer any questions you may have.

Actually you dont have to as a volunteer. Some require a couple classes in order to be reserve, you do need an academy as an apprentice. Volunteers and reserves gain their training as they work

There is a lot of training and testing involved even with the volunteer ff. Go talk to the folks at the station. They would love to give you the info you need.

of course you have to go thru the academy where they can teach you those fire fighting skills to prepare for your firefighter job...

I sure as heck hope you have to still attend that, it might not only save a life, might save yours also.
