You could try... but it would likely mess up the unit. Don't be cheap and actually buy new ones.

You could try tapping out the excess dirt for a really short term temporary fix, when it comes time to replace them it's best if you want the unit to remain efficient!

Try looking at Wal-mart. The white filters are not easy to clean and then they get torn up (I tried).

I vacuum mine and they seem to last twice as Long. I don't smoke so this may have something to do with it though.
