Both of these we can reason through, but I'll show you the algebra also.

1. I don't like how this is phrased. "3 times more" could mean "4 times as many" if you're trying to be annoying, but I'm going to assume it means "3 times as many, which is more."

So Francis is worth, in some sense, 3 Williams. So we have 4 total Williams, which own 252 cards. Therefore each William owns 63 cards - 63 for the real William, and 189 for the three remaining Williams, which were actually Francis.

Or in equations:
f = 3w (Francis has 3 times as many hockey cards as William)
f + w = 252 (Together, they have 252)
Substitute f -> 3w
3w + w = 252
4w = 252
w = 63
Substitute w->63 into f = 3w
f = 3(63) = 189

2. I still don't like the word "more". But it's the same technique. There is a set of English discs, and a set of French ones three times bigger, so the total set is four times as big as the English discs alone. Since the total is 24, the English discs are 6, and the remaining discs are French, which are 18.

f + e = 24 (24 compact discs, total)
f = 3e (3 times more French than English, or French is three times as much as English)
Substitute f->3e in f + e = 24
3e + e = 24
4e = 24
e = 6 (6 English discs)
Substitute e->6 in either original equation
f + 6 = 24 becomes f = 18
f = 3*6 become f = 18
So 18 English discs

Let the number of william cards be x
Then Francis cards will be= 3x
(add them)
x+3x=252
4x=252
x= 252/4
x=63
so william has 63 cards
3 times of 63
3*63= 189 francis cards.

Let julia english cds be x
then french cds will be=3x
Add
x+3x=24
4x=24
x=24/4
x=6
so english cds =6
then french cds=3*6
= 18

1. let fransis' cards=x and william's cards=x.
2. as a rough equation: x+x=252
3. fransis has 3 times more cards than william, so fransis' cards now equal 3x.
4.the equation is now 3x+x=252
5.now it is a simple algebra equation. add the x's together. the sum of the x's is 4x.
6. the equation should now look like this: 4x=252
7.divide the 4 to get x by itself. x=63
8. YOU ARE NOT DONE YET. you now know that william had 63 cards. plug in 63 to find fransis' cards. 3(63)=189
9. William has 63 cards, and Fransis has 189.
10. Check your work. 63+189=252

Now problem 2
1.let julia's french disks=x. let julia's english disks =x
2.as a rough equation: x+x=24
3.we know that she has 3 times as many french ones than english ones, so let the french disks now equal=3x
4. the equation should look like this: 3x+x=24
5. combine the x's. the sum is 4x.
6. now solve the equation 4x=24. divide out the 4. x=6
7. substitute in 6 for the first equation 3x+x=24.
8. 3(x)--------> 3(6)=18
9.julia has 18 french disks and 6 english ones.
10. check your work

1.4 divided by 252 = 63 so william has 63 hockey cards and Fransis has 189 hockey cards.

2.4 divided by 24 = 6 so Julia has 6 english Cd's
and 18 french CD's.

Let x = William. Let 3x = Francis because he has 3 x more

Now, let's solve for x

We know that William (x) and Francis (3x) have 252 cards, so
x + 3x=252

Now, one x plus 3x = 4x, so let's say that
4x=252

Let's divide each side of the equation by 4. (That'll get rid of the 4x on the left side and leave us with just x), so let's go
4x/4=252/4

After actually dividing each side by 4, we're left with
x=63

x=63 (that's William)
3x=189 (Three times x is Francis)
63+189=252 (Both boys)

The second problem is pretty much the same, so here goes without all the explanation.

x + 3x=24
4x=24
4x/4=24/4
x=6
3x=18
6+18=24

Hope this helps.

1. 252 / 4 = 63
Francis has 3 * 63 = 189
William has 63

2. 24 / 4 = 6
6 English CDs
18 French CDs

1. 352 X .30 = 105.60 fransis cards
352.00 - 105.60 = 246.40 willams

2. 24 X .30 = 7.2

1.
3x + x = 252
4x = 252
x = 63
Fransis has 189 cards (3x) and William has 63 cards (1x).

The 2nd one is exactly the same with different numbers.
