During that time the banks in New Orleans used the word Dix (Ten) on bank notes, so the name Dixie was formed.
In 1859 the Musician Daniel Decatur Emmett wrote the popular song. “I wish I was in Dixie” which was used as the anthem for the Confederacy during the war of Northern aggression.

I think there is a famous song named Dixie that the southerners used to whistle, therefore "Whistleing Dixie".

Dixie is slang for Dixon,as in the Mason-Dixon line.It's the border between north and south(Pennsylvania and Maryland).
