College credits work this way:

Generally you get 1 credit for every half-hour per week of classwork (assuming you are a full time student on a semester basis). This is just lecture time, where the professor will get up in front of class and go through the material. This does not include lab work, where you work with a teaching assistant (TA) in smaller groups to answer questions and solve example problems.

You generally need to take about 14-16 credits per semester to graduate in four years. Having said that, that's a pretty full-on course load for a Computer Science major. If you can afford it, adding on an extra semester makes the load a lot easier to handle.

Credit is specific to a given university/college/junior college and may or may not be transferrable to another university/college/junior college. As a result, you need to do some homework as to which classes are acceptable up the chain of higher education.
