My two favorite songs are Imagine by John Lennon and The Marine's Hymn.
Compare:
Both are memorable riffs that are instantly recognizable from the beginning; Both songs were designed to elicit a predetermined emotional response from the vast majority of the population; Both songs have stood the test of time, and are just as relevent today as when they were first performed; Both songs represent people who do not wish to fight. (No, Marines don't want to fight... we just realize someone has to know how).
Contrast:
Imagine was written by and for a war protester who was attempting to get the world to view a utopian planet, and the good that living in peace can be- The Marine's Hymn was written for people whose job requires them to participate in a most "un-perfect" world and live in a world where peace does not exist; Imagine wants us to imagine a world with no Heaven- The Marine's Hymn points out that, not only is there a Heaven, but the Marines are actually guarding it; Imagine stirs the souls with its soft, sparce melody and arrangement- the Marine's Hymn usually stirs the soul with it's loud, brash, fast paced arrangement; Imagine can only be played at one tempo and volume in order to achieve the desired effect- the Marine's Hymn can be played either fast or slow, loud or soft, and elicits an entirely different emotion depending on the arangement.

my to favorite songs are when im gone by eminem and call me when your sober by evanesance when im gone and call me when your sober are both about someone they love. when im gone is about his daughter who is mad at him for always leaving home (it is a dream). call me whan your sober is about her boyfriend who dosent care about her and she is telling him its over.
