haha, this is one of the great gambles. I have been a waitress at the lowest class restaurants to the highest class.
When waitressing is good, your working at a high class, busy restaurant were you are allowed to dress *ahem* slightly innappropriatly.
When waitressing is bad, your working at Joes Scummy Crab Shack or something lol, wearing no makeup and a chunky uniform, serving an average of 3 tables in 8 hours.
Both restaurants will probly pay the same base sallery. So if you wanna make it as a waitress, doll up and apply at the classiest restaurant in town.

The amount of tips depends on the restaurant. While $30 an hour might happen at the busy times in an expensive restaurant, it's not likely average. And then those tips are often shared with other staffsuch as bartenders and busboys, so the waiter/waitress doesn't necessarily keep them all. And remember, not everyone tips well. And during the hours that aren't busy mealtimes, tips can be pretty sparse.

Besides, being a waiter or waitress is very hard work, so many people would not want the job.

You are right, if the person is working in a restaurant known for high tippers. One time I was having breakfast in the local cafe, and the man left the waitress a tip, and said, "I hope you can use this." She smiled. After he left, she said, "he doesn't realize how much I make in tips. I just got back from 2 weeks in Hawaii." I was a waitress at one time, and yes, tips can make the job very pleasant, even if the job itself sucks. But tips aren't only for waitresses now, are they? We are told to tip the beautician, the newspaper carrier, the person opening the door for you, and on and on. So, if you can't get an education for a high-paying job (if that is important to you), then pick the career field where the tips are the highest. And then give good service to deserve the tip. Good luck.

I make $2.30 an hour at a family styled restaurant. On a good day from 11:30 - 8 I walked away with $130, excluding my hourly wage. Today during that same schedule I only made $40ish and have made less in the past. It's really hard not knowing how much you're going to make - but if you are good at saving your money when you've made excess, it makes up for it. It's also nice to get money every day instead of waiting for a check.

I don't know where you're from but I made $2.13/hr the 7 years I waitressed. Besides being physically demanding, it's emotionally demanding as well. If people are rude, you have to keep your smile and composure. You don't get "breaks" as servers, if you're busy..then you're screwed from taking any breaks. I barely had enough of a chance to pee and suffered numerous urinary tract infections from holding it. I was on my feet for 6-7 hours straight without sitting down. Lucky for me I have these kick as* veins to proof it (sigh). I have now quit the business since the only way to go up in a resturaunt is to go into management (who wants to work for peanuts at about 80 hrs a week?) I feel so much more calmer and relaxed!!! I do miss the cash everyday but the stress and all the as*hole people can go to hel l. I would rather clean toilets for a living than ever have to wait tables again.

Yes you can make alot of money waiting tables however,
you have to work long hour, do alot of heavy lifting and put
up with the moods of the people your serving. You also have
to be very organized and be able to multi-task.
Most of us get tired of never knowing what our weekly income
is going to be. It can change with season, weather and your
own sense of humour and humility.
Been there. Done that but not anymore.
