My wife has a Compaq Presario 1277 that's she's had for many years. It stopped working a few days ago. The light on the front of the laptop that indicates AC power turns on, but that's about it. It doesn't turn on at all (with or without the battery in). In the end, all I need to do is get some old data off of it. Is there a way to do that?

The laptop is DEAD, it will not turn on under any circumstances. With or without AC power or with or without the battery in.

If you have access to another computer you should be able to open the case and remove the hard drive, then use an adapter cable to connect the drive to the second computer as a slaved drive. You may have to change a jumper setting on the drives so the new system bios will know which drive is the master and which is the slave. On older systems, you may have to manually detect the newly slaved drive correctly. For this you may need to get manufacturers settings for the laptop drive, so look on it's label for Manufacturer's name and model number, etc. Look up their website and look under support for the correct settings for the correct number of heads, cylinders, and sectors, for your model, or call Compaq and see if they have these settings. Once the laptop drive is detected in the other computer's bios, you should be able to boot up and "see" another drive. Once you can, you can copy the drive's contents and burn them onto a CD, (with the proper software and equipment.) You can just recover precious files, if you have limited drive space and/or no CD-Rom or DVD-Rom burner. Good Luck! : )

U must have received the recovery cd's with it. Try to boot it with the recovery cd. If it fails, u have to remove the hard disk from this laptop and use it in casing, which u can buy separately, and install it on some other system to see whether the hard disk data can be accessed. If so, u can recover the same with ease.

you can do it yourself. get an external 2.5" HD enclosure, remove the HD from the laptop (what is pretty easy) and insert it in the enclosure. if you're using XP SP2 you not even need a driver for it, the disk will be recognised automatically.
here an example of a good 2.5" enclosure (doesn't cost the world)

it could be you will encounter some problems opening folders on the external disk (especially C:\Documents and Settings\username). in that case you have to change the ownership of that folder using the Administrator account. here's described how to do this

sure, your pc will artwork on only the AC adapter plugged in to the wall, yet i propose you get a sparkling battery finally so which think ofyou've got portability of your pc. only a tip once you get a sparkling battery the proper thanks to get the most lasting can charge will be to absolutely run down the battery once you get it, various cases then can charge it up back, this makes your battery very last more!!!!!

it might work if you plug it in, if not, you can always take out the memory chip and put it in another computer. i would have to take a look at it, but I say you shoukd try that. if that fails, call the company. they have answers usually. :)
