Yes, an avocado pit will grow into a nice little plant with just soil and water, a bit of fertilizer....but keep in mind. An avocado is a TREE. That means it will keep growing and growing.

I know this farmer who digs a whole and throws in about 6 avocado seeds and one usually makes it into a nice plant. If you have a good plant started, one with a root system, you can plant it in potting soil. I use Miracle Gro, the kind you mix with water so you can get generic, and fertilize every 2 weeks. Best of luck to you! Go Guacamole!!

it was long believed that avocados had to be started in water and then transplanted into dirt but this is just not true
after you eat the avocado let the seed dry for a couple of days
and then plant in potting soil and put in sunny location, water well
and often and in no time you will see a sprout

Sometimes they grow up and most often they die after a while. Try planting it in a pot then eventually planting them outside.

What you are doing it correct, however, make sure that you are in a warm climate. If your temperatures fall below 45 degrees for extended periods it will not do well. I don't know where you live but if you are in central Florida or south , then you should do ok....KECK
