As a former accountant and recruiter for the accounting firm, I must say that these are important - but not necessarily the top priorities in an accountant.

The characteristics that the firm (which was one of the Big 4) looked for was:

1. Working knowledge of accounting principles - it's one thing to have taken an accounting course, it's another to be able to correctly post records to the general ledger. Know them inside and out.
2. Reasoning skills - can find her own solutions to problems with proven track record. It's fine and good if you have Time Management, Leadership, Planning, Organization and Communications skills, but you have to PROVE it. Everybody SAYS they have those skills. Find roles where those skills get tested and you can demonstrate it quantitatively.
3. Well rounded person - other interests, philanthropy, hobbies, language skills, cultural skills, previous work experience. This helps broaden your skills as an accountant - and as a person.
4. Intelligence - grades, interviewing skills, accumulated knowledge
5. Demeanor - accounting is not a profession for hotheads, super ambitious, impatient, lazy or careless. Steadiness and dilligence are preferred.
