Why do heterosexuals claim to hate it when homosexuals "force their lifestyles" on everyone else, but then they're the first to turn around and tell us that we need to become straight? My gf's stepdad used to always tell me that he hated to see us together because he felt it was rude to flaunt our "choices" in front of him, then he tells me I need to think about dating his son! Isn't that the pot calling the kettle black?

It's the pot calling the kettle black, and then jumping into a pool of black paint just in case it wasn't black enough already.
Heterosexuals hold hands / make out on every street corner everyday, and no one says boo; they have flashy, extravagent rituals to broadcast and celebrate their heterosexuality which they deny us, some would say wedding rings are also flaunting heterosexuality; they broadcast images of themselves with their families, in their bedrooms, kissing and shopping and doing everything together on my television and in my magazines, and on billboards that I can't "turn off". If anyone in this society is flaunting their sexuality, it's decidedly NOT us.

I am straight.
I hate it when gays feel the need to flaunt their homosexuality :"Hi ,i am John and i am gay".Think of it the other way around:Hi ,i am John and i am straight.Ridiculous ,isn't it?
I hate it when they make statements like "Da Vinci and Tchaikovsky were gay".So?Raphael and Rimsky-Corsacov were not.
In other words i hate it when they are trying hard to convince me that homosexuality is the normal and desired lifestyle.
I also hate it when straight tell me i am useless for not having or wanting to have children ,for not wanting to get married again ,for being an artist instead of holding a steady ,boring but secure job etc.
In other words i hate it when people try to validate their lifestyle by flaunting it.
I like people who are whatever they want to be and do not ask for approval. These people have my acceptance and my friendship.

Because those who mind, don't matter, and those who matter, don't mind. Its frustrating. and many a straight man has gone home black-eyed because of it (What? I have a short-temper, turn your attention elsewhere ;P) Often times, with these people, you need to point it out to them that they are also at fault. Mostly religion comes into play and it becomes a touchy issue, for most, that is. I fairly comfortable and pointing out the idiosyncracies of their beliefs. Either way, they are what they are, and we shouldn't say that ALL heterosexuals are like that, cause some are and some aren't.

Either way, good question!

I'll tell you what this is in my view, if you're willing to hear some frank opinion. Some of it is outright ignorance or hate. But most of it is simple insecurity. I think the opposition to gay rights comes from a lack of self confidence of one's own social standing. That's male insecurity mind you- clearly homophobia was born of male competition over women. These men see gays as a threat to their own chances with women. If society allows homosexuals to coexist openly among heterosexuals, then these homosexuals may begin to influence women's opinions of what traits are desirable in men. Rather than controlling themselves, confident in their choice of lifestyle, interests, opinions, and how appealing they are in the eyes of women, these men panic, and demand absolute control over the rules of the game. They insist very publicly that everyone must hold the same opinions and respect the same rules. This is absurd in my mind.

Though nothing new, of course. It's simple Darwinian competition, and has been in play for millions of years. This political issue illustrates two very different approaches to life: One values working hard to make oneself a strong competitor in a game with ever-evolving rules. The other pretends the rules- and only such rules as benefit oneself- are static and absolute, then forces these fictitious rules upon all of society and punishes any skeptics or non-conformists.

Both approaches to life raise one's stock in the Darwinian game. It is undeniable that bigotry is effective. It achieves its aims. But which approach is stronger, that is, which approach ultimately will succeed in the long run? Before you answer, ask yourself one more question: Which approach is more adaptable? Well, you can see where I'm going with this. In a game of Darwinian competition the more adaptable strategy ultimately wins. So long as man remains civilized, the liberal belief wins out. It requires less energy. One manages oneself, not everyone else.

Civilization produces homosexuality. That's an uncomfortable fact to many men, but that's in our genetic makeup. Let's ask ourselves why homosexuality is more prevalent in cities. Why? Because of the reasons given above. In a city one learns very quickly that one cannot possibly manage everyone's beliefs. In rural settings, however, it is possible. People who live in rural settings are no different than their urban neighbors, it's just that one Darwinian strategy- the conservative one- plays out more favorably. Why is homosexuality more accepted in Europe? Older cities.

I believe my analysis applies to many other issues, not just the issue of gay rights. I see this political issue as one of many social conflicts that at their most basic become a struggle of the self versus the group, the individual versus the collective. Nothing new, Freud called it Civilization and its Discontents. Who you side with depends on your self-confidence regarding the Darwinian competition at stake. Do you gain more by siding with the group, or do you gain more by setting out on your own?

Hugs!

They feel they are having homosexuality forced upon them because they feel they are being threatened by it. Their desire to make gay people straight, meanwhile, is their being on the defensive against the perceived threat.

Bigotry and arrogance. Bigotry for thinking that you aren't as good as them and are 'flaunting your lifestyle' by not hiding it from them, and arrogance for thinking that you cannot possibly be happy unless you lead a straight life as they do.

not every heterosexual claim it sis. I'm one myself and I've got many gay and lesbo friends. and i don't mind a bit. they even kiss and hug each other in front of me, i really don't mind that, but if a gay guy is trying to kiss me, then there's a serious issue as i think cos am against it. the problem is about your gf's stepdad. search about him and try to understand him, try to understand why he thinks gay marriages are wrong, then try to let "HIM" understand "YOU". i hope it'll help you and your gf's stepdad to except the fact that not everyone's alike. :-)
