Has anyone noticed when people ask an ironic question here or with a slight twist of sacrasm, the brits or others answer with a witty comment while the americans answer with a doom and gloom or NO DONT DO THAT its bad for you etc! I love americans by the way I lived there for a while its just something I noticed.

I think it may be to do with the closeness of irony to a self deprecating mindset. They don't laugh at themselves as much as Kiwis, Poms or Aussies, perhaps because they are a culture that rates success so highly. If you are in that sort of driven environment you have less inclination to enjoy a laugh at your own expense.

This is not really describing irony but I think it a part of the whole. Like two symtoms of a disease. Just a thought though...

There are American sub-cultures with highly developed senses of irony, but the general culture is pretty clueless. The art of irony just hasn't been indulged and cultivated the way it has in Britain. Quite sad given all the ironic things happening in Washington.

I have noticed the same trend.

How did the Piranha Brothers Monty Python sketch go down in the USA?

Revised (addition): this lack of perception seems to be dysfunction that would not suit them in Europe, it seems a genetic trait like autism, but is probably something to do with their culture. Russians seem to have it as bad. I would not advise them to visit an English pub as people would find their behaviour offensive and rude. It is worse in person than on the Internet. New Yorkers seem to be the worst.

They are quite serious about most things and expect everyone to be like minded. I've been reported before by using that Brit humour you speak of. I think mostly it comes down to not being able to hear the tone of your voice and see your facial expressions as u say 'ask' them.

They also tend to get insulted very quickly when someone says something a slight bit ironic or sarcastic. I literally have to smile, in person, and sugar coat, online, to make sure they knew it was not a stab but just how I am. Makes me exasperated at times; other times, just makes me feel fake.

I'm American, and I agree with you. I can't believe some of the questions that get serious answers.
