A friend of mine and I want to go to Chicago...we plan on taking a train, we only live like 3 hours away...but don't want to drive. And then getting a hotel in walking distance from the train station...then want to shop at nothing too fancy...and maybe check some awesome things out. We are only going for Sat and Sun. Limited budget!

Anyone have any recomendations of anykind for a first trip to CHICAGO???

thanks so much!

You'd better do a search on something like Orbitz.com or Priceline for cheap rates. Anything right downtown is going to be expensive. And don't worry about getting from the train station to the hotel. We have a great public transportation and can get you anywhere pretty quickly. You might want to look for something on the north side of the city. Nothing wrong with other parts, but there's probably more to do on that end of town (clubs, movie theaters, bars, shops, etc.) And the people watching is a little better. Go to the Timeoutchicago.com or metromix.com websites and you can check out bars and find the ones with drink specials ($5 martini night, etc.). There are a lot of good, cheap places to eat too. Check out the Chicago magazine website. under the dining category they have something called "Cheap Eats" with restaurants that are inexpensive but great. Finally getting around is pretty easy and cheap on the bus. Cabs will cost you a bit more, so plan your evening before you go out.

I would recommend the Embassy Suites just North of the Chicago River in downtown. It's going to cost a bit more than some others, but a lot less than most - and it includes a hot made to order buffet breakfast daily (food can be pricey downtown). I've stayed there with the family when we drove from Florida. It's a perfect location to downtown, the Magnificent mile, waterfront parks and Buckingham Fountain. It is easy walking distance to the Hancock Center and Watertower and Navy Pier, etc. Lincoln Park Zoo entrance is free and worth a cab ride. The entire Grant Park area is awesome.

Go to www.877chicago.com. There you will find out prices for hotels and get deals on rooms. Plus you can get tourist info. Chicago is a great city to visit. If you are riding the south shore from south bend, ride all the way to the last stop at millenium park (randolph street). You come out right on michigan avenue. Michigan avenue is an awesome place to be with so many shops and things to see. If you can get a hotel on a side street of michigan avenue, it will be awesome. The nightlife and shopping are so much fun and the hotels aren't that much with the winter rates.
