Who really cares, why do people get so offended.
If you are not religous and someone says merry christmas, you shoudl see it as a seasons greeting, I am sure they are not trying to offend you, but instead they are trying to offer a hello which happens to be during a certain time of year.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

to take the Constitution literally "separation of church and state" it would not be wise to make such a statement, but at the same time the children bring home Christmas cards that they made at school, which, if following the letter of the constitution is also wrong. in fact any religiously based holiday such as Easter and Halloween should be left out of the school environment. (unless, of course it is a private or church school). now don't get me wrong,
to me, with all the things that are happening on this small planet, this very trivial, and should not be a priority in our daily lives.
consider this; if we spent as much time, effort, and money on these concerns we probably could have cured the common cold.

I do not recall making a salutation illegal. It is showing respect and thoughtfulness to remember a day having special meaning to a student.
