okay if you have gold coins with writing engraved in them from long ago, why is it more valuable then gold the exact same weight?
-i mean it's not 'antique', it's just as old as the gold coins,

-if you would melt the gold coins down they would cost less? i just don't get it???

Gold is priced by weight and pureness.

the value is in the history of the coins, not just in the monetary worth of gold per troy ounce. It is the fact that the coins have survived relatively intact and the history they have been through that is more valuable than metal, gold you can get anywhere- an old gold coin that has possibly been in the hands of Caesar, can't be gotten just anywhere- brings history to life

because the coins that are engraved have history and you cant replace that and no they would probably cost the same to melt

Get them appraised, they're probably worth more with the ancient pressed emblems on them.
