I have a masturbation/porn addiction and have been trying desperately to be free from it. I have tried filters, therapy and recently installed Internet accountability program to be accountable of my web activity.
Before I had mb/porn addiction, I was suffering from severe depression. Being naive about depression, I thought I was supposed to overcome it with pure willpower. It only made things worse.
I desperately needed to find an escape route from enormous pains caused by severe depression. I didn't want to turn to drugs, alcohol, tobacco, sex cuz I knew they were wrong and destroy people's lives. I tried sports, activities, reading, riding bicycle but those only made me feel better temporarily and didn't fix my severe depression.
Then I found Internet porn which I thought of as nothing more than a guy thing. Since then, I have been self-medicating with porn whenever I am stressed/depressed. In another words, I became addicted.
Can anyone familiar with my problem offer me advice?

How to avoid porn addiction on the Internet
1. Consider installing porn content filtering software( Strongly Recommend NetDog ,you can get it from www.netdogsoft.com ) on your computer. it will help to protect you from stumbling into pornography by accident, That's important.
2. Do not try to guess what the address of a Web page is. Many pornographic sites have similar addresses of respectable sites. For example www . whitehouse . com is a porn site. The real address is www. whitehouse . gov
3. Never click on Web site addresses that you receive in an unsolicited email.
4. Do not open attachments that come in email that are unsolicited.
5. Use filtered search engines or reputable directories to find the information you need.
6. Do not search for terms like girls. Think before you enter a search term.
Stick with reputable sites.
If something looks questionable, don't let curiosity get the best of you. Delete it or close the window.

No, I do not have a similar problem.
But may I ask, how do you know you have a problem to the extent that it is complicating you're life.
I see that you mentioned you were depressed. Do you know this, or have you merely labeled yourself.
The same can be true with all labels. Now you say you used to exercise, ride bikes, etc.
Could you try doing that, again? Just get out in the fresh air and see how it goes?
And don't overthink the problem. Forget about yourself for awhile, and that should give you a break.
Don't tell yourself negative things.

Well personally I don't have a porn/masturbation problem but I think that if you keep yourself away from the computer and keep yourself from masturbating long enough to tell your body that you don't need it, it might just work. When you're trying to keep yourself away from it, tell yourself that it's a serious problem that needs to be solved and that if it doesn't get solved that it could turn out like alcohol, drugs and tobacco. Tell yourself that it could mess up your life just the same as drugs and nicotine. Addictions to about anything can be considered a drug if its uncontrollable. Try to talk to a counselor or a friend or someone you trust very much.

With a husband who has the same problem I can understand what you're dealing with. You said you suffered from depression, I also understand that. You are just looking for an outlet instead of trying to deal with the problem head on. The problem wasn't fixed so it just led to other problems. Think of a mechanical problem on a car. If you don't fix it, it will just lead to more costly problems. You need to focus on the depression and get help for the underlying problem. If you cannot do it yourself, therapy can definetelly help you. Therapy has helped with my depression so I can tell you truthfully. That is my advice, I hope it helps, and good luck.

Search for Patrick Carnes, Ph.D; he has written several books on this, has a treatment center or 2, and often speaks at conferences on mental health and addictions.
Also, find your way, information on Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous. Alsoo known as The Augustine Society, just Google them and they can help you find online and local groups, literature, etc. They are MUCH MORE CONFIDENTIAL than any other 12 Step group, and won't give you any shaming about this...
Celebrate Recovery, a Christian addictions group, also works with these addictions. Google them, too...

First you need to consult a doctor about your depression. Taking medication for depression is not a crutch and is actually quite common. I think if you take care of the depression issue you will be able to get rid of the compulsion to "self medicate". However if you still experience the need for this type of release you may have to seek a physician's assistance in handling your obsessive compulsive behavior with medication.

I don't share your problem but I think you should go to a professional for treatment. This problem that you are facing should be faced with the help of a Doctor. Self-medicating yourself can create additional problems for you. Don't feel bad for asking for help, not asking for help is bad. Be true to yourself and take care of yourself, "you are important!"

what really works for me is eating less. if you fast from sunup to sundown, this helps. also, stay busy, work out, and don't eat afrodisiacs like chocolate and sugars in general.
