The buffalo are similar to migratory birds and move where food is most abundant. So during the winter, the buffalo moved to the southern part of the Great Plains, as spring advanced northward, the buffalo followed eating the tender new grasses reaching the northernmost part of their range in Canada and then as the cold winds began, they again moved southward. The Sioux and other plains dwellers depended on the buffalo for food, clothing, and their tents. Smoked buffalo meat was a winter food staple. Because of the buffalo's migrations, the Sioux never developed much agriculture and depended on wild fruits, nuts and seeds but their main food was meat. Even the cooking fires were made from dried buffalo chips (manure).
