Trouble getting the car out of park, I have to push the brake really hard and that sometimes gets it out of park

You don't say what year model, but my 96 had an electric solenoid in the console that required the brake pedal to be depressed to get it out of park. On the right side of the gear lever was a keyhole. Just stick any key through the hole to press down and release the locking mechanism.
If the solenoid has gone bad, like mine did, that will be the only way to get it out of park.

when this is happening have someone see if the brake lights are working. If not the brake light switch it going bad. Also but more rarely is a faultily throttle body. it shows higher then normal voltage and thinks the throttle is being applied in neutral and will not release the interlock.

There is cable that goes from the brake to the shift lever. It could be a matter of adjustment, but more than likely the cable is going bad and need replacement.

if yours is an automatic, your first thing to check would be the fluid, my th400 transmission has a small leak, and it does the same thing, and if your low, make sure you get the correct fluid or you can run in to more problems.
