You should get a passport. Most hotels are clean and usually inexpensive. The price will be less in the smaller towns. $35-55 US. In the larger towns price will be $45-110 US.

Not sure about the passport but if you want to get a good flavor for North Dakota culture you could try the Dahkotah Lodge Guest Ranch in Medora. This is a family ranch and you can try your hand at some authentic cowboy skills.

you will need a passport if after January 8th. The best place to stay in North Dakota is inside.
