what do colleges especially look for in a applicant?

im in my second year of high school and i have a 3.6GPA. I want to to go to The University of Michigan. I play Varsity Tennis and have a few hours of community service but thats pretty much it. What can i do that would make me stand out for others and what will boast my value?

i live in michigan so what would a good score by on my SAT's and ACT's?

They look for a well rounded person. Join a club. That will help.

Have more than just good grades. Be active... not just a couple of hours here and there, but really be active. Get involved outside of school, have a job, do sports, take college courses early, get into the arts, learn a different language on your own... You have to be more than grades and a bunch of fluff activities. Admissions counselors look right through that stuff and it is easy to see "fluff" in an application.

your gpa is good, but a bit more community service wouldn't hurt.

The way you write your statements is key as well. expand your vocabulary and think about some subjects you can write about.

make sure you write a clear, organized, and concise essay. Make sure all your points are supported by your thesis.

Make yourself sound pro-active. "I was president of such-n-such" "People looked to me for this and that" etc etc
