Why not get him a gift card to download music from itunes if he has an iPod. Otherwise if he has game systems ask someone what genre he likes to play (RPGs, racing, shooters, strategy) and buy him the latest game in his preferred genre. A great way to find ideas is strike up conversations with him. Ask him about a certain music group and lead him into a discussion or mention a game and ask his opinion, he may just tell you what he thinks is the best gift without even knowing.

Scientific studies show that 14 year old boys like to get gift cards to any store (even if it is girly), so they can get some thing for their girlfriend. If the 14 year old boy is without a girlfriend, lets just say he needs help.

Money is always the best thing....but giftcards are the second best. It is almost like money, but then the giver has a little more control over how it is used. Try a giftcard to an online music store, a best buy giftcard, or a Borders/Barnes and Nobles giftcard. (Borders and Barnes and Nobles have a wide selection of both books and music.)
