Just tell him.
Or you could try to get to know him. Maybe you just don't like him because your friends don't like him.

What you want to hear in this situation? Would you want to hear a lie or would you want to be strung along or would you want someone to tell you the truth? I think that I'd rather hear the truth is the gentlest way possible. Just say that you think he's a great guy but you are not interested. Let him know that you don't think it would be fair to lead him on and you respect him so you want to be honest. Then, I'd say in most cases, that it's easiest just to cut things off totally. But that depends on the situation. Just try to be truthful without being deliberately hopeful. Good luck.

A nice way to tell him is to first point out all his good qualities and then say something like "As much as you have to offer someone I am in a different place in life and Im not interested in more than friends right now."it will let him down genlty sparing his feelings and it will also give you the opportunity to remain friends if you choose to. Who knows he could be your next bestfriend. GOOD LUCK.

Guys prefer to know where they stand with you. Look him in the eye, and say that you simply don't feel that way about him, and you cannot help it. He might be able to move on more quickly this way.
[Have you considered giving him a chance though? I always found a guy attracted/in love with me to be an attention getter. They treat you so good, because they want to be with you so much. Love can produce love.]

Very gently and with great concern for his feelings. Be honest , tell him you are not interested without going into a laundry list of reasons why, tell him it would not work out and then leave. Don;t dangle hope for him.

Be honest but be nice. Try the old "I like you as a friend "or the "I think of you as a brother" thing. Good Luck!

The best way is honesty. Why sugar coat it. Just tell him you do not feel the same and that is how it is.
Good Luck.

just tell him. rejection is a way of life. if they don't get a bit of it now, they're screwed later in life.
