Theres tons of ways to determine that. They can also find out by checking the lungs. To see if there was ever air in there or not. If not then it means the baby was born dead and never took a breath.

The police need any information that anyone who supply about the mother or person who left the baby. If the medical examiner gets the dead baby, they do a thorough examine.

Most likely they would check the infant's lungs to see if any oxygen were in them. The lungs would have had to expand if the child wasn't still born. If the lungs hadn't expanded, it would mean the infant never took a breath of air outside of the womb.

The true-to-form way to always tell is if the foramen ovale is closed. This is a valve in our hearts that closes (normally) when we take our very first breath, and is the way to tell whether or not the child was born dead or alive, among other medical techniques.

This sounds like a trick question, one of those brain teasers.
If you want the real answer, the baby would have no air in it's lungs at all, because it would never have taken it's first breath. Babies have amniotic fluid inside their lungs when they're in the womb. It's not a very nice question though.

If a baby is born alive they will breath. Bringing oxygen into the lungs. A baby who is born stillborn will not have oxygen in the lungs.

Because the babies lungs were inflated, and the baby actually took it's first breaths. If the baby died in utero then the baby would still have amniotic fluid in it's lungs
