For ANY sort of body shaving, male or female, you'll want to start by showering or soaking in a hot bath or shower for at least fifteen minutes prior to shaving. (The hair is VERY coarse and needs a lot of break-down before it'll come off easily.)
Your next step is to take a baby oil with vitamin E, which soothes the skin big time in preparation for the razor.
After that, you'll want to take a brand new razor (non-disposable) to handle it. Although softened, it's still very coarse and dulls a raxor very quickly - figure two body shaves before you need a blade change. Shave as needed, and move on.
After your shave, you want to take cocoa butter (not in the pump bottle, but the thick kind in a tub) and use it to, again, soothe the skin. This whole process will allow you to reduce the amount of irritation and in-grown hairs.
Never Nair - it's skin damage in a bottle and can scar. But outside of that, best of luck!

I used to shave it all down but I hated how sensitive and itchy it is. I bought a bikini trimmer and I trim it way down but not bald. In the mean time put some baby oil on the area after showering, pat dry.

... how did you shave it? I find that if I shave it like I shave legs (bottom to top), it gets more irritated than if I shave it from top to bottom (better for the skin). Hopefully, you used a good moisturizing body wash for it... as long as it's nothing cheap, it should be fine. Just try some aloe or some type of body lotion like Aveeno, Olay, or Bath & Body Works products.... and LEAVE IT ALONE AS MUCH AS YOU CAN!
As far as WHY we do it... it's just cool. ^^ It feels nice down there when it's shaved. Plus, some people just don't like hair down there. I personally think EVERYONE should shave their privates (especially men). I mean, if you don't want to, no one's forcing you to. You definitely don't have to.

I KNOW it doesn't look like much, but TRUST ME, you'll be happy you got it! I NEVER get irritation when I use it, it's AMAZING. Good luck on looking slick and smooth. ;-)
Oh, and desitin and baby powder help a LOT withe the irritation, and when you use this trimmer, the powder helps to give you a nice, steady, dry trim. It seriously is the best thing i ever bought. You'll NEVER have a problem shaving again. I swear. :-)

I use this stuff called Bikini Zone. It's pretty expensive; about 6 bucks for a little tube, but you only need to use a little. It helps prevent ingrown hairs and it soothes the pain of nicks or whatever. It really works.

Just rub a little bit of baby powder on the spot, it soothes the itchy feeling.

I like the way it feel down there with no hair. Yes, it to makes me feel mosre sexy. Once I started shaving I couldn't stop. In the summer less hair down there causes less iritation and less smell if you sweat down there. Oh, and I like it because oral sex feels much better with no hair.
