My husband collects tools as a hobby. I think he has every power and hand tool imaginable for any and every application! Some of his tools he's had since he was a kid. He keeps them in immaculate condition. He lends them ONLY to trusted friends/colleagues. He allows the kids to use his tools with proper instruction, but the kids MUST return them where they were found and in the condition they were found or they are grounded from them.
HAHA! He just told me the other day that he can't think of a SINGLE tool that he needs. I can't even IMAGINE it! I just laughed and said, "yeah, give it a couple of days. You'll come up with SOMETHING that you just gotta have!"

For carpentry and general maintenance I have Makita Tools. They are incredibly tough and versatile. I would highly recommend them to anyone. I do have some DeWalt and they work well. However, I do prefer the Makita brand as my favorite.
For my automotive and heavy equipment work I prefer Snap On. They are made well and seldom break when used in the right manner. They are higher priced but they are worth it. I also have some Craftsman wrenches and I like the warranty at Sears.
I also have many chain saws by Stihl and I like them the best. They are a little hard to start, but once they are warmed up, watch out. I also have some demolition hammers by Bosch and I like the performance. They work extremely well and are tough.
I always clean my tools immediately after use and I never lend them to anyone. I learned the hard way once, and that is all I needed to keep my tools to myself.
If you buy premium tools and keep them in good working order, the payoff will be greater in the end as the tools will last longer and provide many years of reliable service.

Plenty of tools - hand tools (like Wrench Sets), gas powered tools (like my own chain saw and power washer), electric Powered tools (like my Circular Saw, my Table Saw, my Drills, etc).
I DO keep them clean -- and clean them after each use. I do this so that they last longer (and it has definitely worked, since they are in good working order).
I DO replace tools when they are used up -- for example, living in a hurricane zone -- with two major hurricanes that hit within 9 months (Ivan and Dennis) -- I burned up and destroyed a gas chain saw -- there were SO MANY trees and branches to cut that I went through many chains, and finally, the motor gave out. So yes, I HAD to replace that unit. IT did its purpose -- and by doing the work myself -- I can definitely say it was WORTH it for me to go through 2 chain saws -- the combined cost for both of them was LESS than the cost of having a tree service take down two trees.
I do NOT lend out my tools -- when I did this as a young woman -- I did not get the tools back -- so I now just keep my tools to myself and use them when I want to use them.

These days I have mostly woodworking and household related tools. The type for repairing drywall, hanging cabinets, and the odd plumbing repair. I still own several sets of wrenches and ratchet sets, but no longer work on my own car, as I don't want to void the warranty. The computers and electronics on cars today make them run more efficiently, but I sort of miss the days when I wasn't afraid to crack open the hood and start digging around.
I keep my tools clean and never lend them to others.

I have enough tools so that I could lend out some of my other tools but I have some tools that are of sentimental or very important to me. I take good care of my tools but If I happen to borrow any tool I will not let it out of my site and I return it clean.

Power Tools that I plug into my Power Squid. Yes they are always clean and ready to go. No, I never lend them to anyone. I need them for work, but I wouldn't loan them even if they were sitting in my garage unused.

Rule of thumb:
Keep tools clean...Keep them maintained...Don't lend them out! This includes all different types of tools. They will last for years...unless someone steals them from you!

I have gardening tools which I keep in good order. I do not ever use power tools. I tried to use a drill ONCE and it skittered off what I was trying to drill and got all twisted up in my shirt and I thought whoa!!!
I can start a lawnmower on the first yank though. I really give it the business!
