External Hard Drives in simples words are hard drives that are not implanted into your CPU. it is connected using either a USB port or other transfering peripherals. they usually are much fancier than the ones inside the CPU and are commonly used for efficiancy, style, or comfort. Key benefits to using external disk enclosures include:
Adding additional storage or new removeable drive formats to small computers such as the Apple iMac, laptops, and notebooks.
Adding more drives to any given server or workstation than their chassis can hold.
Transfering data between non-networked computers, jokingly known as sneakernet
Adding a backup source with a seperate power supply from the connected computer.
Sharing the data on a drive in a network-aware enclosure.
Preventing the heat from a disk drive from increasing the heat inside an operating computer case.
Simple and cheap approach to hotswapping.

Its an external storage device that needs minimal or no software to install. It either connects via USB or firewire cables and they sit outside the desktop or tower and can be transported around if necessary. Its a good way to enlarge the storage capacity of your computer without opening it up and adding parts and changing settings..

external hard drives allow you to take info from your computer and take it and use it on another machine. For instance i have externall hard drives for linux and windows, that way i can play with infomration on either or, they are not bootable, they can be i just havent made mine bootable. It is also a security feature to use external hard drives, someone cant steal your data if your not plugged in.
