I believe that if you want to hear the truth, it is what you will hear, but if you want to hear what suits you, you will drive away the truth.

Most people say "just say the truth I won't be hurt"... but all they want to hear is kind sweet lovely words because they need safety from other people since they feel too insecure to trust themselves, that's why they need a good answer from others. Like those who keep asking "do I look good?"... you actually have to know that all they wanna hear is "yes you really do, i'm sincere"... truth can not be always said because human beings are proud of themselves and don't want to be hurt.
As for me, I like to hear truths because that's what makes me stronger and tougher against anything. You just have to accept the fact that you ain't perfect that is perfectly normal not to be always 100% good. Truths guide me through pain and happiness... and lies, always in pain... some prefers to lie because some people can't accept the truth... that sounds ridiculous to me because lies can only make others feeling good about themselves but nothing's real... what's that for?

If one listens with an open mind, maybe they can hear the truth ,instead of hearing what they want to hear. Most of the time, the truth fall on deaf ears.

What is "truth"? The thing that we want to believe? Two people can see, hear or say the exact same thing and walk away with two different ideas. It depends on the prejudice you apply to it. In some cases people will keep demanding the "truth" until they get the answer they want.

That is a very good question... and something that a lot of people that post questions on Yahoo Answers might want to ask themselves.
Too many people have very little interest in anything outside of their rigid mental landscapes, I feel. I try to avoid answering questions that include phrases like "and don't say (fill in the blank) either, because I'm tired of hearing it." In other words, they don't want either the truth or a good discussion... they only want you to agree with their one-sided arguments.

An old atheist wrote before the end of his life in his journal.. that he didn't follow atheism because it was so believable and obviously creationism was way out there. But he believed it because he did not want to change his ways, he wanted to do what he wanted when he wanted to. Even if there were so many facts that proved creationism was real.. it wouldn't matter to them because they don't want to be corrected. Therefore they only hear what they want to and reject truth.
Also people reject truth in circumstances when they have done something wrong.. they do not want to feel the guilt of what they have done so they convince themselves that it was not them. They only hear what they tell themselves, they forget the truth.
It's human nature to only want to hear what we want.. it's when we accept what we can't.. that we learn.

It depends on the issue and how mature or evolved someone is surrounding it, hormones and the general mood of the day for most people.
Sometimes people can hear the truth one day, the next they are ready to freak if they hear it.
People are as mutable as the truths they are willing to accept.

I call it "selective inattention" - of course you only want to hear the stuff you WANT to hear...remember, "The truth will set you free, but first it will p----ss you off!" But if you get over being angry long enough to be honest with yourself...then you're usually better off in the long run. Next time someone tells you something keep this in mind. It's hard for me to do.

Since Adam we have only heard what we desire to hear. Why because our history is evident of our actions.
(1Sa 2:3) Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let [not] arrogancy come out of your mouth: for the LORD [is] a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed.
