I'm going away for six weeks and wondering how low I can set my thermostat to protect everything in the house. I have no plants or pets.

depending on where you live you need to be very carefull.even with heat on is your home set up to be left.don't leave the water running!!!!!!!!!!drain lines freeze also and can back up causing major damage, this should only be done in occupied homes.consider having the house winterized(turning off water and blowing out all lines and valves with air pressure)potable antifreeze(not automotive type)in all toilets and drains.leave heat at 50-55 to protaect books/paperwork/artwork from moisture.

Probably around 60 degrees Farenheit. Bottom line is, is there risk of your pipes freezing? If so, you should leave at least one sink on a very slow drip (size of a pencil lead) of both hot and cold water, so that the main water line AND the line to the hot water heater don't freeze and burst.

since you have no plants or pets, 55 to 60 would be safe and energy saving, that way you don't run into danger with your pipes freezing if you're in a cold climate.

If you are expecting sub freezing weather...since you didn't mention where you love...make sure you keep it above 36F and keep the water a bit in your bathroom and kitchen areas to keep them from freezing.

In moderate or warm/hot climates I don't ever recall even setting my thermostat.

Lived in Michigan and Pennsylvania winters and Iraqi summers.

15 degrees celcius, as it will prevent your pipes from freezing cracking, along with your water heater.
