Perfect grades, SAT scores, etc.... THEN, you have to add on the extras. Get involved, really involved. Don't just volunteer somewhere and log a few hours on a resume, become critical to an organization (and get a great letter of recommendation). Take college courses early, for fun and for the challenge of it. No fluff will be allowed... you really have to be the top, best, brightest, and most genuine thinker to even be considered. If you are not, don't waste your time applying, you will be just one of many wanna-bees. Yale is no joke.... you have to be at a level that scares most people... it is not like a purse to show your friends ("Hey, look, I go to Yale... isn't that neat!")!

Extra curriculars! I don't know about Yale in particular, but more and more schools are looking less at SAT scores than they used to. You should also take the hardest classes your school offers (getting A's isn't worth anything if you just take the regular classes). And try to get some sort of leadership position in your extra curricular activities - team captain, club secretary, principal cellist, whatever.

a few years ago, a girl at my high school got accepted to yale. she had over 36 hours of college credit and a 4.6 gpa. getting accepted to yale is similar to getting accepted to any university except the standards are ALOT higher. you need a couple hundred of hours for volunteer work, a high sat/act score, and leadership positions in extracurriculars. good luck.

Don't go. My husband got his Master's degree there and thought the education was overrated. The only benefit is being able to put "Yale" on your resume. You can get the same IF NOT BETTER education at any public school and for a FRACTION of the cost. Not to mention, you don't have to live in New Haven, CT (where Yale is located). What is your intended major?

you could start a club or join one
um well your grades and sat scores need to be perfect becuase lots of people who apply to yale already have good grades but if everybody has perfect grades...who stands out? so you have to have lots of extra's like maybe do some leadership thing or try to do a contest like art or wrtiing or something

Have a parent who went to Yale, and come from a place that doesn't send many people to that school. Most Ivys try to create a mix--geographically, ethnically, etc.

partcicipate in a sport or art type class such as band, art, orchestra, etc... I think you should also aim for a 2150 or higher on the SAT cause that's the expected average on the princeton review. And take alot of AP classes, but not so much that it overwhelms you.

All of the above.
You want ANYTHING that will let you stand out from the crowd! But you don't just want to do a bunch of things half-a$$ed. You want to do the things WELL and make sure you can get good reference letters etc...
