I do build gaming rigs as a side business. I must admit i mostly cater to very high end rigs but for you much depends on your budget. Certainly on a reasonably capable rig a Core 2 duo processor gives the best performance overall. My next choice would be the Athalon x2 AM2 processor family. That said if you are building a gaming rig the video card is likely an even more important choice. since you did not state your budget constraints it is hard to make a recommendation on specifics. Assuming you are on a limited budget this is what I would Recommend for a gaming multimedia rig on a budget (approx $1000)
Core 2 Duo e6300
At least a Geforce 7600GT or ATI xt/x1650 256mb video card
Intel 945 chipset motherboard w/ integrated network and sound
450 watt name brand power supply like Antec
8ms to 12 ms 17 inch LCD display
DVD dual layer writer
! mb Generic pc2 533 memory
120 GB hard drive
Logitec x-530 5.1 speakers
Logitec or MS laser mouse
ms multimedia keyboard
Windows XP media Ctr Edition
Computer case your preference you might look at the Antec sonata II it includes their 450 w smartpower power supply
As i said this can be done for about $1000 for parts
Now if you have a few more dollars or wich to reuse some components from an older system like the dvd drive keyboard etc... I would look at upgrading the components in this order

1st-Video card to geforce 7900 GS or radeon x1900 xt
2nd- Motherboard to an Nforce 570/550 or on the intel side 975 chipset
3rd- CPU to an intel core 2 Duo E6600
4th-Memory to 2 Gb DDr2 memory
I stress that the order I gave you is important because they will provide a the greatest upgrade path for your system. I hope this helps

If you're building a Computer and can Afford it, The Intel Core 2 Duo E 6600 is what i would recommend.
It's faster then any Athlon 64 x2 at the moment .

It means it has 4 cores. think of of a center as a microprocessor interior a processor. surely, you could run 4 classes at as quickly as each with a max of three ghz CPU velocity. they do no longer combine.

before you go to a computer store, think first on the main purpose or main usage of your computer? and your budget?
if your main usage is for games, and have unlimited budget, intel duo processor is best preference with intel chipset mainboard, with 120gb hard disk drive, 1gb ram memory and a minimum of 128gb video card, depeding on your budget.
but with budget constaint, i guess you can go for amd processor

if you can afford get an Intel Core 2 Duo E6600, best performance/price ratio. it even beat an AMD Athlon FX-62, btw at half the price.
