The current thinking is this:
Baby girls are typically born with 1-2 million.
Throughout their lives, every day, they lose eggs.
By the time a girl reaches puberty, she has between 300,000 & 500,000 eggs.
She continues to lose them.
The average woman typically ovulates 400 eggs over a lifetime and the rest are lost.
Nothing can slow down this loss. Not pregnancy, not birth control pills. Nothing.
Certain things can speed it up: smoking, chemotherapy, radiation.
The number of eggs a woman has at age 35 will depend on how many she was born with and if she has any other conditions that would cause her to lose eggs more quickly.
She can be tested with a simple blood test, to determine if the quality and quantity of eggs remaining would likely result in pregnancy. (FSH and Estrogen on the third day of the cycle.)
By age 37, the average woman has about 27,000 eggs. By menopause, she has about 1000 eggs.
But it's not just the number of eggs that a woman has that determines if she'll get pregnant. Quality also counts. (The day 3 test can also help you here.)

A girl will be born with a certain amount of eggs (ex. thousands) . However, the girl will not develop any more eggs during her lifetime. The most eggs she will have is when she is born. When a woman ovulates (mid-cycle), an egg is released from the ovary, passes fallopian tube then to the uterus for implantation. When it is not fertilized in the fallopian tube and does not implant in the endometrial wall of the uterus, it passes through the menstrual cycle. A woman will have hundreds of menstrual cycles in her lifetime. At 35, it may be harder for a woman to have a child but it is not impossible. It may be impossible to count a woman's eggs, because eggs go through oogenisis before they are ovulated in the uterine tube. Also, if an ovary is looked at through a microscope, only a few eggs are shown surrounded by a follicle. If a woman is having problems bearing a child, there are many alternatives a woman should take. An appointment with a certified doctor is the first step.

Hi,
I just had this discussion with my OBGYN. He told me a girl is born with a million eggs, but by the time you are 25, you only have like 50,000 left and they die very quickly over the years.
I am not sure how many are left by the time you are 35...

Women's eggs are never released during their menstrual cycle. We have what can be referred to as main eggs and then we have polar bodies, The polar bodies are what are released during menstruation, but the eggs you get pregnant with never leave you. It's a very complex thing.

The body reabsorbs anything not used. Not all the eggs can be fertilized. I'm not sure about having them counted.
