there is a shot called depro-provera which you only have to get once every 3 months. that's effective immediately, unfortunately most women don't respond favorably to it. it can make you feel crazy (not a good thing). otherwise, most pills become effective after you complete one month (cycle) of them. ALWAYS check your prescription information to learn the specifics about your pill first. but generally, the pill is not effective until you've taken it long enough for the hormones to get built up in your body.

It could take a couple of months to be safe. You should use other means of protection in the meantime as well as the pill.

WAAYY back when I was on the pill, I was told to use addition protection for the first month, until the hormone levels were adjusted.

The pill will work according to your dosage. With any daily medication, it needs to work it's way into your system. With today's birth control doses being extremely lower than when it was first introduced, It will probably take a week to become effective.

Usually a through the first pack but remember its not 100% nor does it protect from std's. There are also short term as well as long term side affects.

I remember being told to wait at least one month for them to become effective. Check the package insert and see if it tells you (if your pharmacist left it in).

I was always told you had to go 30 days ... or one full cycle to be "safe." But here's some official information:
