A bottle of his favorite liquor. If he is into sports, basketball or hockey tickets. Movie fan? A subscription to Netflix. A gift certificate to his favorite restaurant.
No clothes or anything like that.

I would suggest a gift card of sorts it may not be very personal but he will be able to get what he wants and you don't have to hum and hah for hours on end. You can always give him a very personal gift that he cannot buy in any store. If he likes games XBOX 360 or the new PS3 or really a new computer isn't much more.
