Vaginal odor, discharge color, smell and thickness vary woman to woman, and in that same woman, it would vary with the time of cycle. What one person may find unpleasant, another may find to be perfectly innocuous.

Overgrowth of certain bacteria, rather than yeast, can cause increased odor and discharge. This can be the case especially when there is change in hormone levels at ovulation and right before the menstrual bleeding. Small amounts of bleeding can exacerbate the bacterial load, resulting in more odor; in more discharge or a different color in discharge and/or thickness.

If odor persists, with unusual vaginal discharge, it should be evaluated and possibly treated, usually with antibiotics vaginally or orally. If it is a problem only during part of the cycle, then it is likely normal variation and not something to be concerned about.

Also keep in mind that it is possible that the things that we eat can influence the scent and appearance of other body secretions such as urine, sperm and so forth.

paaatches --In yeast infections, typically white clumpy discharge that causes significant itching is a clue and if you are sexually active, it is best for a vaginal discharge to be evaluated to make sure it is not a sexually transmitted infection. If you are not sexually active, it may be a bacterial or yeast overgrowth, so medication may be needed, but it is not sounding typical for a yeast infection if you are not having itching or irritation.

discharge should not have an odor, it should be clear most of the time, however it can be a little cloudy prior to your period. If it has an odor then it may be an infection. Go to your gynecologist and get it checked out.

Each woman is different and has their own "normal." If it smells really funky, something else is going on. Either yeast infection or an STD.
