I am considering applying to the World Bank for a job as an Admin Asst./ Secretary but wonder if I really should. I have an M.A. and would like a job more suitable to more qualifications, ability and experience. But it is the World Bank after all, and it could open a lot of doors professionally. I just wonder if I should consider a less prestigious, but still highly reputable, organization (there are lots of those in DC) that would offer greater professional advancement.

Let me know what you think!

if it is what you want to do, then do it.

if it isn't what you want to do, then don't do it.

that's my philosophy.

It probably wouldn't really give you a "foot in the door" since you would very likely not end up being considered for a professional position at a company where you've been an admin asst. Not fair, not right, not reasonable, but unfortunately probably true. And showing that on your resume probably won't impress other potential employers - OK, it's the World Bank, but unfortunately admin assts aren't respected as much as they deserve.

But if you have a burning desire to work for the World Bank, and that's the only job you can get, then maybe.

Good luck.

The bottom line is that if you are not employed at present, any job is better than no job. You can take an entry level position, or any position for which you are qualified, and get a little hands on experience in the real world. That's what's going to help you get the job that is more challenging and more suitable to your qualifications etc. etc. If you sit around waiting for the perfect job to appear, you're going to have a long wait.

A job is a job.

What is your MA in?

Sometimes people really can study themselves out of a job.

I suggest you take the job and keep looking for a better job in the meantime (the World bank admin job may not be a career but it can help give you "real-world" experience) - at least you'll have money coming in, and if there is room to move in the company, i'm sure you'll be able to find your way up.

I think it will help you and give you a lot of experience. Sometimes we have to accept lower positions to gain higher positions. I think you really should take the World Bank Job but only if you feel comfortable in doing it. In the meantime, you can apply for other jobs that you are more suited for and you will have a working background. Otherwise, they will hire you dirt cheap if they can.

I've learned...don't take a job below your educational level unless there's an economic depression and hardly any jobs to be had, and in that case you hide the fact you have a MA. Right now the economy is good, jobs plentiful.

If you take the lower job they will always see you as a secretary and keep you at that level.
