Veteran's Day (originally Armistice Day, November 11, 1918) started as a celebration of the end of WW One, and celebrated by President Wilson in 1919. It was made a federal Holiday in 1938, and the name was changed to Veterans' Day by Congress in 1954.
Sadly, the Congress has made "laws" (United States Code § 6103) that now take many Federal holidays "Observed" on the Monday or Friday closest to the holiday if it falls on a weekend. This creates a 3-day weekend to "allow federal employees to enjoy the holiday"... Schools also take advantage of this.
HORSE-PUCKEY !! I was a "federal employee" for 15 yrs in the Navy, and we often don't get those days off. It's for Congress' employees, Unions (teachers) and corporate interests (sales)
I think it CHEAPENS the holiday.
My city had NO Veteran's Day Observances. In fact the local American Legion and VFW filed to hold a small parade, and were told they could NOT because City Services were closed on Friday and Saturday.
Also, because I'm in the Communist State of California: the schools are not allowed to discuss the Veterans... you see we are all war-mongering, baby-killing, politically-incorrect knuckle-draggers. Who of course rescued those in New Orleans, New York, Oakland, Los Angeles, & San Francisco

Veteran's Day is to honor the end of World War I, November 11, 1918. Because it is a National Holiday, if that day (11th) falls on a weekend, it is celebrated either the Friday before or the Monday after, so it can be honored by government workers and schools as it was intended. Happy Veterans Day (my pop, WWII and Korea) to all vets and Thank YOU! for what you did for our Country...:)

Well, I understand your frustation with the whole fact of not having people appreciate their veterans. But i do believe that there is a Teacher Convention that went on during Thursday and Friday.
