Nerds rule the world, don't let keep you from making a good decision. They are still very good.

I think that marching bands have gotten better over the years, especially the bands in the south. Most marching bands are playing the new music that has come out recently, which keeps the everyone interested.

Marching bands have always rocked... though some are sucky, of course. If you want a good taste of just what an awesome show marching bands can be, check out your PBS station sometime and find out when they are airing the DCI National Finals (That's Drum Corps International). The corps are from places all over the country, and the kids in them are the best of the best. They recruit from high schools and colleges, and the kids have to put up with sleeping on gym floors, cafeteria food, bus travel, etc. OVER THEIR FREE SUMMER, just to be in the darned thing---not to mention long hard practices. They put on some awesome shows.

It's music and a visual spectacle, and totally awesome. Check it out.

And in an aside, I marched with the UGA Redcoats, and in my freshman year, Head Coach and Athletic Director Vince Dooley arranged it where the football team attended one of our night rehearsals, because they never got to see us (halftime they're in the fieldhouse). He knew the value of how much cheering and general support the band gave to the players, and wanted to make sure the team knew it, and saw what they were missing when they were in halftime. It was great.

Anybody who's attended football games (especially collegiate) knows just how much a marching band can contribute to the support of the team... including making a heck of a lot of noise when the opposing team has the ball. Heh. :D

Marching bands have definitely gone mainstream on us. Nerds are a thing of the past with movies like Drumline.

Marching bands have definatly gotten better!! I love to watch The Phantom Regiment while up at band camp, because we tend to model our shows after their performances. I love how they use the old music, like Opera, and classical, and not too much mainstream!
