Merida is a very culturally rich city. It's the capital of Yucatan state. It's famous for the Yucatecan Food, Music, composers and musicians, Yute (a fiber very popular to make rugs now a days). It has a low cost of living and it's closer to cuba and the United States than it is to Mexico City. So, it's not unusual to have a feeling that you are in a different country. They are known to be a part of the country that wanted, at some point in the history of Mexico, to be a separate state. If you have the chance to visit, don't hesitate.
