im am starting a band with my bro, so far its just the 2 of us. I play guitar and sing, and he plays drums, but we are black. Based on our race, would we be accepted or unaccepted by an emo or rock audience?

i say go for it. dont worry about what other people think. if they wont accept you because you're black, then you shouldnt want their acceptance anywayz. focus on making yourself happy, not others. its all about the music!

Racial stereotypes in music are about as acceptable and as applicable as racial stereotypes in any aspect of life... Meaning they aren't... People form stereotypes based on their own ignorance, not on facts.

Example...

While most of the world saw Vanilla Ice as a joke, he wasn't just some random white guy who showed up on the rap scene. He actually started off his career playing for predominately black audiences who really accepted him and liked his music.

Most of the original rap and hip hop music and styles were heavily influenced by Jewish people. Most of the original record labels were owned by Jewish people who worked closely with the artists to develop their sound. This is why the Beastie Boys weren't afraid to move into rap and were fairly well accepted.

So, if white people can rap, black people can start an emo band. Like others have said, no one will care as long as you're good. If you allow your race to hold you back from doing something that you want, you have bigger issues than whether or not to start an emo band. Best of luck!

i think you most deffinatley be accepted, most music lovers could careless about race they just are in search of good bands that have substance. if you look at the gym class heroes though they are sort of rap rock i suppose the lead singer, travis mcoy is africian american i believe, not positive though but anyway many fans adore them so, no as long as the music is good you guys shall be a hit.

I thing you would be accepted. Living Color has a big following. Jimi Hendrix still has alot of fans. The roots of rock music is all black. The blues has a baby and they named it Rock. Muddy Waters said that.

yes you can be accepted:
bloc party
plain white T's

and afew others...

But I have to be honest, you have to have the talent to back up what you do.
If you do it thinking " im black is this gonna work"
then your gonna give yourself more of a bumpy ride than need be.
