how do i find the square root of 576?

2006-11-12 10:26:11 · 10 answers · asked by Hairdresser4you 3 in Science & Mathematics Mathematics

okay i am trying to find the missing length of the right triangle. 7 & 24 are the right angles. I need to find the missing length. I know that c(squared)=a(squared)+b(squared). So i came up with 7(2)+24(2)=49+576=c(squared). The problem is this is a multiple choice and 24 is not one of the answers. It shows 25,25,27,or 28? So am i doing the problem wrong? What is the right answer?

24 -- I used a calculator

If you wanted to take a guess, you could do this:

Notice that 20^2 = 400 and 30^2 = 900, so √576 is in between 20 and 30.

Then notice that 576 ends with a 6, and ask yourself what two numbers between 0-9 when multiplied together produce a number ending with 6? The answer is 4 and 6.

So, since you know your answer is between 20-30, and ends with a 4 or 6, you could try 24*24 and 26*26 to see what you get.

In this way you could, using some deductive reasoning and just a little trial and error, find that √576 = 24.

Hope that helped!

I'm not sure I get your question completely.
The square root of 576 is indeed 24. If 2 sides
of right triangle are 7 and 24, either the hypotenuse
is sqrt(49 + 576) = sqrt(625) = 25,
or
The hypotenuse is 24 and the third side
is sqrt(576-49) = sqrt(527) = 22.956(approx.).
