the crack is also the sound of the air or oxygen being driven out of the spaces in between your joints/interstitial disks, which are also cushioned by some synovial fluid and fat deposits, etc. is it bad??? nah, i've been cracking my back and legs and knees and knuckles since age 10--now 32, still crakin'. i don't feel pain, and my hands are lovely as the day i was 12.--abigail nabi marcos serrano aka androdefin@yahoo.com or oceanmermaid2007@yahoo.com+++peace....

I do crack both my knuckles and my neck. But it is not bad for you to do it. You will no get arthritis from doing that. The noise you hear are tiny bubbles of air caught in your knuckles and neck and when you crack your knuckles or neck you hear the bubbles being popped.

No. There isn't any proven fact which indicates cracking knuckles cause future damage. It will not cause fat fingers, arthritis or any other problems. A cracking joint is simple fluid rushing in between the joints at a fast pace when those joints are being spread, which cause a "pop" sound.

I had read in a medical journal that cracking your knuckles, etc. can actually help reduce the chances of arthritis.

Nope, this doesn't cause any damage. What causes the crack is a nitrogen bubble in your joint popping.

It can give you arthritis in your hands, and it makes your joints fatter. I too need to stop, it's one of my bad habits!!
