It isn't the Unicorns that can't race in the Derby...it is that the Jockeys of regular horses are afraid of the fairies who ride the unicorn. If you had a hobbit as the jockey of the unicorn, you could race.

It's a known fact you can't race unicorns. It's against their principles. I did however hear that you can race them illegally in downtown Los Angeles.
