Most fuel (other than hydrogen, nuclear etc) is hydrocarbon.

Plastics, solvents, most paint, most (all?) man made clothes, the insution on the wire...

A bit of "building block" for modern material as well as fuels, solvents and some medicines too!!!!

they make cars go, they are the building blocks of medications, cosmetics, and most things we take for granted in modern civilization
