the brits sold the english speaking canadians a bill of goods, claiming to be saving them from being swallowed up by the u.s., (so they got swallowed up by britain for a couple of centuries), and then the english canadians turn around and sell the same phony bill of goods to quebec, convincing them that they can never make it on their own. that's ridiculous. why don't the quebecois tell the english speaking canadians to get lost?

You know, that's a great question and I've always been intrigued by and admired the people of Quebec for their fervor and solidarity in keeping their language and cultural identity alive in North American.

I think the last time Quebec had a vote on this was around 1995 but I don't recall the percentages of those voting for or against the referendum. I do think it came pretty damn close to making it once in the 60's or 70's.

I think the bottom line is that if Quebec did secede from Canada, the economic repercussions would be horrific not only for Quebec but for Canada as a whole because Canada would essentially be split in two and Quebec would be biting off the "hand" that feeds her. That's not to say she couldn't make it on her own or that eventually she wouldn't thrive.

One other question that I've never been able to figure out when it comes to this issue: if a civil war broke out in the United States as the result of a few southern states wanting to bail in the 1860's, then how could Quebec get away with becoming a sovereign nation simply by a majority of Quebecois' voting for such a separation?

Bonne chance et je me souviens aussi.

What would they be? A land lock nation with little industry and limited international trade. And the ability to build even a national self defense force would be difficult.

Being an independent nation is more involved than it's own language.

Oh that the issue is as simple as your mind appears to be. I for one am offended by your assumption that because I'm not French, I must be English. Get over yourself. We have far bigger issues in Canada than the separation of Quebec.

they almost did a few years ago in that referendum, but I dont know if they want to they should, but it isnt like they treat the Quebecois badly, they even made french a co-official language.

Perhaps an independent Quebec would have about as much power as Andorra, and would simply be ignored.

Because the French are cowards.
And can't make it on their own.
They would starve on their own, eh?
