Well you have to look around really hard with something like AltaVista's mp3/audio search. It's really hard to find stuff that isn't a knock off of good music by an unknown band though.
(I'd give up and download Limewire. I use it, and have no problems. If you have a virus scanner, just scan the files you download right away, and you won't have any problems, as the software itself ISN'T a virus, despite popular belief.)

The only thing that could meet such specific requirements WITHOUT DOWNLOADING SPYWARE ON YOUR COMPUTER would be www.singingfish.com.
Type the name of the artist / song in the "Fish it" field and you'll get lists of results with what is available to either listen to or download for free.
But be warned that the majority of mp3s are available to stream online (not download) and check the length of the songs as well (you're obviously not interested in excerpts of 0.48 seconds - yes; you get that too within the results)
However, I have found many free tracks to download from time to time.

www.emule-project.net is what i use for music. It's free but you have to download the software. Emule doesn't use spy ware or anything like that so you and your computer are safe. I have used Emule for only a few months, but my dad (who is very fond of Emule and introduced it to me) has used for a long time without any problems. Emule is very easy to use and not only carries music but also videos and movies all for free.

You can get it in a lot of places. The only problem is that downloading music for free is illegal.

veoh.com is the best website and you can movies, commercials, everything on this site, it's so good and you can download them onto your music player and unto your mp3 or ipod.
