My daughter is 8 years old and loves to dance. She needs a bit of help keeping rythym but it really is a passion for her. She likes to put on shows and dress up to dance. Is there a way to get her started in dance where she can have fun and gain some confidence? We live in NYC and would like to maybe get her into theatre.

It all depends on what kind of dance you want her to take. There are many great schools in NYC and they all offer different programs. The Ailey School ( 55St/ 9 Avenue) has a kids program called junior division, Steps on Broadway ( 74 and Broadway ) has a kids program and also Broadway Dance Center ( 57 St), Peridance ( 13 St and 4Th Avenue) , ballet academy east, Ballet Hispanico ( 89 St of Amsterdam).

This is in Manhattan and this are just the main schools where she probably does not have to audition. If you want Ballet, there is ABT , Joffrey , Dance Theater of Harlem as well as many others.

All this schools have different programs, with different levels of commitment, so you have to check them out and decide. Also talk to your daughter to see what she wants. It is the worst for a child to be in a program she does not want to be, and believe me, she does know what she wants even if it is for a couple of months. The main thing is she likes it.

Try out a few studios and make sure to pick one that's relaxed and where she is comfortable. A lot of studios have musicial theatre classes for younger dancers, so it's a great options for kids who want to break into theatre. And just some advice: don't push any classes she dislikes...ballet is a fundamental, but unless she likes it she'll burn out...

Summer camps are also great options for theatre newcomers.

NYC is the best place in the world for Ballroom and Latin. I'm serious. World-famous professionals relocate to NYC for that reason.
Go to www.ballroomdancers.com and find a couple of studios near you. The one I happen to know is Ballroom on 5th, it is pretty good. I'm not from NY, I only know that one because coaches from that studio get invited to CA to jugde and teach.
