Homer was not only one of the most poetic geniuses of his time, but was also that, in the sense of being a playwrite,,, He WAS a philosopher,,, and expounded much in his life.

Homer introduced concept of FAME into Greek society. Fame was a form of immortality.
To feel the difference compare this concept of Homer with later philosophical concepts of the meaning of the human life, like being saint/good, or being wealthy/prosperous. Ancient Egyptians sought immortality in building expensive burials. Greek way to immortality was much more democratic: one n+eeds only his/her own actions, not inherited position to invest in pyramids.
Heroes of Homer didn't believe in the afterlife, nor believe that happiness could be sustained, so only goal in the life is to achieve fame.
Competitiveness of ancient Creek society was strongly related to this goal to achieve immortality through fame.
Plato criticized Homer and considered philosophers (people interested in knowledge) more worthy than warriors.

only approximately each and all of the places in Odyssey are actual. Ithaca of course is a solid determination... even though, in Athens you will visit many greater monuments and historic past web pages. in fact, Athens has not something to do with Odyssey :) yet i assume you're able to desire to integrate a visit to Athens and to Ithaca besides.
