The politically correct view is that marriage is a covenant, religious.

In fact, Marriage is a legal contract.

I do not know of any state which does not issue marriage licenses. The laws make marriage somewhat like the privilege of driving a motor vehicle if you are licensed, or having the exclusive privilege [within a retail area] of selling liquor or other controlled merchandise.

The gays need the protection of "Marriage" because so many laws give perqs to marriage partners, specifically inheritance if one dies without a will, lower income taxes, access to discounts on car insurance, better credit access because of being able to count two incomes for payback of loans, and access to housing, education, and all sorts of other things.

Especially, Social Security spouse benefits, and pensions are a real problem. Did you know Social Security benefits are available to common-law spouses, or to a parent of illegitimate children if a wage earner dies? Illegitimate children or even grandchildren can draw from a wage earner's account.

Why does a wage earner have no say in who can receive benefits? Who paid the FICA taxes?

Pensions are another area being abused by employers, who have deducted monies from employees for years; denying benefits to a long time spouse because the couple was not married is a favorite ploy to keep more money for the top managers, a la Enron.

If marriage were not a legal contract, and so many requirements built into the laws to provide privilege and perqs for married people, gay people would not have sought the protection of "marriage".

Gay people pay FICA taxes and Income taxes; gay people are citizens; gay people have the same rights as any other citizen. They are being denied equal protection under the law.

Gay people are not freaks, or automatically sinners any more than the rest of us. God made all of us, and we are commanded to love one another.

If marriage were only a religious covenant, why are there so many laws affecting marriage?
