Coal is actually very inefficient as an energy source. One ton (2000 lbs or 1000 kg +/-) of coal produces the same amount of heat energy as 18,000 cubic feet of natural gas, 160 gallons (1100 lbs) of oil, or 5 ounces of uranium. Also coal produces much more waste than any of the other energy sources.

First you must understand how coal is made. Coal is actually a plant from like a gazillion years ago. Back then, these plants absorbed energy from photosynthesis. After millions of years, these plants died, decayed, and piled up on top of each other. The piles soon became covered with so much weight, the plants would be compressed together through pressure. The coal now contains, let's say, "plant power"...
