How does this work? I just started Nuva ring, actually it's my first birth control, and my doctor said that it only takes 7 days to become effective. I've always heard it takes a FULL Cycle...It's making me think about how many hormones are actually in the ring... does anyone know why it only takes 7 days opposed to a full cyle? thanks

Actually, if you have regular periods and put it in at the start of your period, you are ready to have sex and be fully covered against pregnancy right away. If your periods are irregular, I would wait a full cycle to make sure the Nuvaring is working properly.

I was on Nuva ring for 15 months and was told to use back up protection or abstain for 1 week, after that I was told I was protected, I didn't have any issues with it until I put it in late (I am 23 weeks pregnant now) So just make sure you use it properly 3 weeks in 1 week out. Good luck

I had the Nuva Ring inserted right after my abortion 2 months ago and she said it would start working immediately. They suggest the Nuva Ring after an abortion, especially, because of how quickly it starts to work. There is a small dose of hormones entering your body everyday for 3 weeks, but because of where it is located, they start taking effect very quickly.

Basically, any hormone birth control is said to be effective after 7 days, however, for young women, it's recommended by many gynecologists to wait a full cycle to allow their bodies time to adjust...mainly because we're just so fertile! :) So if I were in your position, I would wait a full month, but I'm not you, so it's your choice! I am currently on the NuvaRing, but I switched from the pill. I waited 2 weeks after changing before I felt comfortable.
